Cycling For Unity
Cycling For Unity
“A bike ride around the U.S. uniting in solidarity with our brothers and sisters of the Amazon.”
Garrett Russell and Sara Miller will begin a 15,000 mile bicycle loop around the United States beginning on July 15th, 2012 in Anacortes, WA. The journey will follow routes created by the adventure cycling association along the four borders of the country. The route will leave the NW and head east to Bar Harbor, Maine, then south to the Florida keys, then west to San Diego, California, and finally north along the west coast to the original start point. The two cyclists will ride unsupported by vehicle or support staff living frugally in a tent and eating on their camp stove. Garrett and Sara will be riding to raise awareness and funds for Amazonian indigenous who have had their homes and cultures polluted and are in dire need of clean water and healthcare. All funds donated to Amazon Watch will go directly toward improving the lives and health of those whom we ride for. Money raised for Cycling For Unity will go directly to basic life essentials for survival on the road (ie: food and campsites).

In 2007, Garrett traveled to Ecuador on a travel course with Pacific University to tour the Amazon and the country. In a serendipitous chain of events the story and camera changed paths as he and his group became entwined in the indigenous Ecuadorian plaintiff’s fight for elemental human rights. The journey left a lasting impact and formed the narrative for the documentary “Sipping Black Water” which can be viewed at the link below. Since then, Garrett with partner Sara, have lived deeply connected with the outcomes, story and people of the region. May the men, women and children of the poisoned rainforest communities who have inspired us to take action, speak clearly to you and allow us all to rise in solidarity as family directly connected by the earth under our feet.

Outside of my work in documentary… I am an avid outdoors addict. I’ll backpack, hike, camp, cycle, kayak, run or stumble my way to any beautiful place of solitude I can find. I enjoy sharing nature with others and through experiential education with children. I was born in Arizona. I grew up in Oregon. I have transplanted to Montana. I live, love and find home on the road. I enjoy playing numerous instruments, partaking in most sports and transparent conversation. I seek genuine friendship from everyone I meet whether I know them for five minutes or five decades. I believe everyone has a story as important as my own and I find fun and connection in getting to know unique people from all makes and models. I have spent the last two years since my last tour editing and directing the web series “Water Tension,” on CyclingForWater.com. It has been an honor to compile such a vast collection of storytelling, but I’m ready to get pedaling, get camping and get back into the nomadic lifestyle. Cheers to all my other travelers out there! Much love.
I am a born and raised Montanan; growing up forging for food and wrangling wild horses. My love for wild spaces and awe of the natural world has led me to wander the earth exploring other peoples, cultures, and places; to hear music and tell stories, to eat and to dance. I have a love for yoga, for books and pottery, teaching, and mushroom hunting. The smell of the ocean makes me feel free, dirt under my feet alive, the hot sun exotic, and the chill of the mountain air at home. My body will roam the earth for many years to come but my roots will remain planted in the mountains and plains of my youth. My love of life and drive to see the open road (and appreciation for good beer) has only grown strong with my companion, Garrett, where I have truly experienced that, “happiness is only real when shared.”

Do Your Part:
We also encourage any and all peoples in all places in the U.S. and abroad to participate or put on an event in your community to stand in solidarity with both our 15,000 mile trek and the inspiring individuals and communities in the Ecuadorian Amazon who are fighting for clean water, basic healthcare, justice, dignity and to be heard. Ride your bike 10 miles across town, start a walk-a-thon or jump rope everyday while supporting in mind and spirit our family in the damaged rainforest. Help support these communities with clean water and adequate services while creating a better intent for the people and path of the U.S. We are all truly are connected in our daily actions here with the source extraction of our fuels, the companies we choose to support financially and the affects of this nation upon cultures and places throughout this planet we all call home. May this be our small piece of the greater action sweeping our generation and culture to bring positive change and a sustainable future for the next kin of this earth. Through word we create action, and through action we manifest change; spread the word and be the change.
